Had a close look at one of Leigh's fave lures at work the other weekend. The Lucky Craft Sammy is a great little surface lure, looks just like a little lizard swimming along and Leigh hooked up on a fair number of bass with it. It looked so good I decided I had to have one - googled it up that night and decided that as long as I'm capable of holding a piece of wood and a stanley knife there's no way I'm paying that much for a lure! Off to the garage with some cedar, the knife and the bandsaw.
Whittled one out and hung some hooks on it, took it down to the river for the tank test. Discovered it needed more weight in the tail. More whittling and a strip of lead and epoxy and there it is.

The extra weight in the tail makes the lure sit "head up" in the water and has the added benefit of making it cast better with the weight in the tail, it keeps the lure from tumbling as much as a regular unweighted lure.
Bit of paint and away we go!

Had intended to give it a trial in Lake Jackall but the waves were great on the beach breaks so I went surfing instead!
Maybe next week.
