A couple of weeks ago (the day of the thick fog) the large one & I headed off to Somerset to 1. Get his boat on the water & 2. Go fishing. I should have realised it was going to be a less than perfect day when I took the wrong turn off to Forest Lake & got lost in the fog & ended up ar Carole Park. We finally reached Somerset around 6.30am & were on the water a few minutes later. The plan was to work the far bank off the spit initially for Shawn to get some casting practice in as he hadn't used a baitcaster for a few months. Problem1- we couldn't find the shoreline as the fog was so thick. This soon degenerated to finding the deepest water we could in this channel. I think we peaked at 105ft. Problem 2- Shawns casting (a) An excellent birdsnest followed by several expletives. 20minutes later and a considerably shorter line he was back in business. (b) Shawns Knots- a poor knot tier always blames his leader material. Those "blades" really fly when propelled by 117KG of rippling muscle ( Fat boy can throw them a long way as well when the line breaks) Lure one lost.
The next 5.5 hours were spent feeling our way around the dam. The sun did not burn through til midday- amazing stuff the whole dam shrouded in white. We found the schools but could not entice a bite-water was still flowing into the dam from the rain a few days earlier, possibly this had something to do with it. We found lots of back waters which ( had we been on other dams) would have held barra- but nothing. The time was spent losing two spinnerbaits on successive snags by the large one (again suspect knots). A bit of casting practice for Shawn with his new barra spin stick rod & TD Diawa reel- first cast saw a Jackall mask (red head) go sailing over the horizon. (Refer (b) Shawns Knots above) Finally went back to a submerged stump that we had found earlier that had a school hanging off it for some jigging.
The only fish of the day was a Barred grunter jagged by a TN60 in Champagne Tiger by me. (Roy will send you a photo separately- Jess is away for a few days)It was over 20cm long & identical to the Jackall (only bigger) Two other boats on the dam but we did't see any other fish pulled- not that we could see more than 20 feet for most of the day . Overall a quiet day but plenty of laughs - We shall return.
