What a place, definitely worth more than just a couple of days. So much water, so many bays.
Shawn & I arrived around 1.30pm Friday & set up camp. The place is much the same as years ago except now has a live in on site manager(he loves a chat). Big powered sites are a plus. A celebratory beer & some lunch before a quick explore of the dam. The dam was like a mill pond, nice & flat. Off to a far bank for a bit of casting practice & a refresher on how to use the tackle back for no fish. A bit disappointing, but there was always tomorrow. A few beers, a red or two, a feed & a drop of Shawns special Navy Rum ( brought along especially for Al) -Don't worry Al we put it to good use. A visit from a little bandicoot got Harry Butler Jones all excited and it was nice of it to leave a little deposit behind for him to stand in the next day. Next morning up at dawn NOT. We were on holidays so we managed to get on the water after breakfasr by 8.00ish. Up the dam to a spot we had seen some birds in the water - by the way the wind was up, as were the white caps on the water. Perfect fishing weather. Didn't take long before Shawn was onto his first, a FAT mid 30cm fish, a few minutes later I was onto his mate, another very strong & fat fish. Shawn then boated what looked like a football but on closer inspection was just a VERY FAT Round 42cm bass. Have a photo will send to Roy. The fish then shut down. Spent the rest of the day exploring Borumba Creek & the top of Yabba Creek. Saw one toga but Harry Buttler Jones said it was a lungfish as he heard it breathe. A million casts and we headed back to camp for happy hour & a feed as we forgot to take our lunch with us. The wind was strong all day which had made for difficult fishing but we were confident tomorrow would be better . No bandicoot visit but that was explained by Harry Butler as being too cold. He had noticed the previous night that the little fella was in bare feet. I have never heard some one snore as they breathe both in and out but Harry can. Even when sitting on him with a pillow over his face. Up early (by our standards) the next day & back to the same spot. Appears being there a bit earlier was the right thing to do. Six bass were boated and a few more lost during this session before they shut down again. Again all fish were big & fat ( not unlike Harry). Shawn picked up nice 44cm pig & well as losing another big one after playing him for a few minutes. He was however on that fish, only using 2lb fireline & a 4 lb leader. I got my PB of 48cm tail length or 45cm to the fork. Will send photo of this to Roy as well .Noticed the bigger fish were taken on smaller lures ie tn50 & on lighter line. Off the water by just after 10.00 & packed & gone by 11.00am Definitely a place for a longer visit. So much fishy water, like a smaller version of Monduran.
