I was in a battery store the other day, looking for a new crank battery for the boat. Had a quick look at the price of deep cycles and that price you were quoted seems to be the go. the 130 amp/hours were up near $500 a pop. Thank the fishing gods my 2 batteries are still in good nick.

Leigh.

Rob,

Good sealed Batteries are very dear and the price you got quoted would not be far off the mark.

Some people I know do use 2 x 6 volt Batteries as you can get approx lets say 110amp hr 6 volt and in reality with 2 of them is equal to 1 220 amp Hr battery.

So if you can get them cheap and have room go that way That is why many Golf Carts are 48 volt but have 8 x 6 volt batteries.

Update- I bought a Supercharge no maintenance 105 amp hour battery from Tweed battery supplies.
The guy endorsed Tony's advice that they were fien for both cranking and deep cycle.
Just over $200 seemed a fair price

I'm probably a bit old fashioned here but why are we being told that sealed, no maintenance batteries are the way to go. If you can afford a hydrometer (about $3.00) and learn how to use it the old check your SG type can save you a lot of money. Regardless, they have all become disgustingly expensive. I'm glad I invested in a good charger some time ago. However it's just a case of delaying the inevitable unfortunately. Might have to sell the old Minn Kota 55 salt, transom job to buy a new battery for the bow mount eventually.

Tony, thats the one

Al,
the no maintenence one was not much more expensive than the others
PS
yes you are old fashioned but you might as well embrace it!

Well that's a disappointment, can't justify all that maintenance any more Smile I was thinking about it again today and remembered when I was helping Glenn out with the hire boats up @ the Hinze he always went 6 volt x 2.
Anyway as with all, time will tell. Old age happens @ a most inconvenient time.

Still not sure on the Allrounder, it went ok but was hard to ger back up to full charge, Even charging all night was not enough. I have a 12 amp charger, but might need something more powerful . i did discharge it more than 75% one time, but that is what deep cycle means. Anything I use needs to be able to take abuse anyway!

Have just had the same problem with my old 75AH Exide that I won in a raffle at a fly comp about 8 years ago. Finally got a dead cell. I think the reason it lasted so long was because of the charger. Went through the same exercise & finally settled on a 100AH Delkor ( lead acid but maintenance free- semi sealed with a breather on the top- via an advertisement in QFM ) from a place at Yatala. $195.00

Eight years must be getting close to some sort of record Ian. Enough to turn a true Scot' green with envy. I think you hit the nail on the head though with the "battery charger" statement. Can't believe how much the price of batteries have gone up recently!!!!!
