Hi Guys,

Some advice please. Smile

I need to respool some reels for some upcoming trips. They are 2000 size spinning reels. I was going to put some mono backing on and top it with braid.

I did this at the start of this season, but did not have much success. Seemed to be getting constant birdsnests. The braid seemed to be getting looser all the time.

Do you do things like dunk the braid in hot water or stretch it between trees?

How do you do your own?

Cheers
Graeme

Hi Graeme, merry Xmas to you and family,
couple of suggestions
1) underfill the spool a bit
2) every now and again pull 50 metres of line off and wind it back on
firmly, holding it in a fold of cloth.
3) if you are doing twitchy retrieves maybe run the line through your fingers to avoid loose coils.

i know braid is better, but i dont remember these issues with mono!

Thanks for the tips Rob.

It's interesting you say underfill the spool, as JB in his book advocates filling right to the brim! I must admit when respooling at the start of the season, I did fill it right up and my problems seem to have started then.

As for the twitchy retrieves, I find it more difficult running the line through my fingers with a spinning reel than a baitcaster.

I will try your tips and let you know how I go...

Merry Xmas to you as well.

Cheers
Graeme

Loops and twists are very annoying, probably the worst thing about spinreels...I also underfill my reels a little bit, as Rob suggested. This may affect distance casting, but it does cut down on the loops. When doing twitchy retrieves, the only thing that you can do is simply keep an eye on the spool and throw a 'cleaning cast' when required (just a long cast, spooling the line back on tight).

One thing I have discovered that seems to help, is when you throw the cast (especially one that will be retrieved twitch-fully - is that even a word?) make sure the rod tip is under water when you start the retrieve. The wet line seems to add more drag and spools the line on tighter. Also, twitch and reel at the same time...this way there is always pressure on the line...dont twitch, then reel in.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Graeme,
No I quite like braid - I just have issues with it sometimes. Kinda like you've described! Laughing
